QUICK HITS – Bears @ Jaguars

Bring on the Packers. Bring on the playoffs??

A few weeks ago, this team lost to the Detroit Lions, now they are one win away (or another Cardinals loss) from heading to the postseason. The 2020 NFL season is crazy. The 2020 Chicago Bears are a hot team right now. Sure, they just beat the 1-14 Jacksonville Jaguars, but last night the Cardinals had everything to play for and lost to the San Francisco 49ers (George Kittle will NEVER have to buy a drink in the city of Chicago again) who were only playing for pride. Thank you San Francisco!

Trevor Lawrence is all yours Jacksonville, you’re welcome.

Let’s get into it.

The Good

Roquan Freakin Smith. This dude may not be headed to the Pro Bowl, but he’s playing like an All-Pro which means a lot more. Two interceptions and he just continues to make great plays.

The Bears Coaching Staff. The Bears offense scored THREE touchdowns in the third quarter. That hasn’t happened in years. Seriously, years. They made excellent half-time adjustments, which they haven’t done a very good job of this season. Have to give credit where credit is due.

Allen Robinson. Pay this man.

Cairo Santos. 24 for 24. One more consecutive field goal and he’ll break Robbie Gould’s record for the Chicago Bears. Most Chicagoans aren’t in love with Robbie after missing a few kicks in last nights’ game that would have helped seal the win for the 49ers. Santos is about to get paid.

Darnell Mooney. Last week Mooney broke the Chicago Bears rookie receiving record for catches with 46. This week, he continued to show why Pace STOLE this dude in the 5th round. He may not be getting very many accolades from the national media, but the Bears have found a great weapon in number 11.

David Montgomery. He didn’t have enough touches, but it didn’t matter. This guy has been on fire the past few weeks. 95 yards rushing and a touchdown, plus two catches for 26 yards. Monty also went over the 1,000 yard mark. Considering how few carries he got when Nick Foles was playing QB, that’s pretty special.  If the Bears can get another running back in the off-season, watch out NFL.

The Bears Offense. Since Mitchell Trubisky came back from being benched, the Bears offense is averaging OVER 30 points a game. Thank you Bill Lazor, Mitchell Trubisky, Sam Mustipher, Allen Robinson and David Montgomery.

Mitchell Trubisky. That interception was AWFUL. Very bad. However, Mitch also threw two VERY good touchdowns to Jimmy Graham (his 8th for the season and the 10th by a Bears TE. Dang, Ryan Pace did a good job addressing this during the off-season) and ran for another. Mitch ISN’T elite, but he’s more than good enough for the Bears to win. Mitch has thrown for 1803 yards with 16 touchdowns this season to 7 INTs in just eight games. He also has a record of 6-2 this season as a starter. This is a no-brainer. Sign Mitch to a short-term deal while you draft a QB behind him. Let the rookie have some time to develop while Mitch plays his game.

The Bad

Letting Mike Glennon throw for two touchdowns. Have some pride. Why did Ryan Pace sign him to a 3 year deal?

Rich Gannon. Gannon was smug, disinterested and showed great disdain for the game he was covering. Be better CBS.

Kindle Vildor. I REALLY like this guy. When he was drafted, I tweeted about how happy I was for him living out his dream. (His draft video was really cool). Vildor liked my tweet. Vildor has been pretty darn good on special teams, but got picked on early today. He needs some time to develop.

Final Thoughts

The Bears 41-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars keeps them in the playoff hunt. Sure, Jacksonville is terrible, but a win streak is a win streak. I for one, really enjoy watching the Bears play winning football. Imagine if the Bears hadn’t kept Mitch on the sideline as long as they did OR if they had just taken care of Detroit like they were supposed to…

Next week against Green Bay is a MUST win. If Green Bay is playing for the NFC’s top seed, it’s going to be a difficult game, but I keep reminding myself how much more fun it is when the Bears play meaningful games.

Buckle up Bears fans, we might be going to the playoffs.

Playoffs?! Playoffs?!
